ABE VAN ROEKEL
Abe Van Roekel, the son of Bert and Mary (Reekers) Van Roekel was born June 8, 1919 on a farm near Sheldon, Iowa. He received his education through the 8th grade in a country school. On December 10, 1941, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Wolf at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, Iowa. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in March of 1942 and served until being discharged on October 18, 1945. After his return to Sheldon the couple farmed near Sheldon and moved into Sheldon in January of 1989. He continued to help out on the farm and have a garden. His wife preceded him in death on July 29, 2014 in Sheldon. Abe passed away at the Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 reaching the age of 95 years, 7 months and 6 days.
He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, a member of the Sheldon American Legion McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145 and the Prairie Queen Kiwanis. He had also served on the Farmers Co-op Board.
Abe is survived by his three children and their spouses, Leroy and Pat Van Roekel of British Columbia, Canada; Dennis and Debra Van Roekel of Fort Myers, Florida and Darla and Gary Schuler of Sheldon; six grandchildren, Darren, Kari, Ryan, Jodi, Paul and Andrew; ten great grandchildren; one sister, Martha Oester of Mesa, Arizona; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, a brother, Arthur and his wife, Carol Van Roekel; three sisters and their husbands, Nancy and Ervin Sanders, Rena and Cedric Caldwell and Geraldine and Frank Brower, a brother-in-law, Ken Oester.
