ARTIE VAN ROEKEL

Artie Van Roekel, the daughter of Peter and Effie (Vander Aarde) Van Zee was born December 3, 1916 in Boyden, Iowa. She received her education in Sioux County schools. On July 5, 1938, she was united in marriage to Abraham “Abe” Van Roekel at her parent’s home in Boyden. After their marriage the couple settled in the Boyden area where Artie stayed at home and raised their three children. After the children were raised she was employed for a couple of years at Smit and Sons in Boyden. Her husband preceded her in death on February 1, 2000 in George. During her husband’s illness Artie lived in George and later moved to the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon for several months. After leaving the Christian Retirement Home she moved to the Good Samaritan Center in George in May of 2007. She passed away at Good Samaritan on Friday, May 18, 2012 reaching the age of 95 years, 5 months and 15 days.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Boyden. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially at the trailer at the Lakes, where the family enjoyed fishing.
Artie is survived by her three children, Norlan and his wife, Roxa Deane Van Roekel of Boyden; Merle and his wife, Ginger Van Roekel of Boyden and Marla and her husband, Grant Krahling of George; eight grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a granddaughter, Lori Krahling; her parents and one sister, Geneva.
