Dale Merrill

Dale Merrill, age 86, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 at home at Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon. Funeral Services will be Friday, March 15, 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. Dave Van Kley officiating. Burial to follow at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation will be Thursday, March 14, from 3:00 to 7:00 P.M. with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon. Dale Merrill was born on November 11, 1932 in Sheldon, Iowa. He was the son of Freeman and Vera (Shaffer) Merrill. He lived his youth in Sheldon where he attended school and graduated in 1950 from Sheldon High School. After high school, Dale was employed by Metz Baking Company. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Houtsma of Sheldon on August 25, 1950 in Sibley, Iowa. They lived in Boyden, Iowa for a few years and then moved to Sheldon. Dale worked in sales his whole life. He bought cattle and sold finished meat for Smit and Sons and later was employed by Tri State Livestock, buying and selling livestock. When he retired from the cattle and livestock business, he worked for Marv Donkersloot, selling trailers. He was also a Sheldon City Councilman for many years. Dale enjoyed driving to his farm in the Dakotas and visiting with Larry and David Diedrich. He enjoyed going to land auctions and he had a great love for anyone's dogs. Dale took great pleasure in his family, watching them grow and mature. Dale passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 at his home in Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon. Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of 68 years, Dorothy Merrill of Sheldon, IA; 3 sons and daughters-in-law, Randy and Pat Merrill of Sheldon, IA, Tim Sr. and Mary Merrill of Rochester, MN, Neal B. and Jenette Merrill of Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law, Cyndi (Lloyd) Olson of Sioux Falls, SD; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Bob Merrill; his parents; brother and sister-in-law, Freeman and Virginia Merrill; and sister, Chevier Miller.
