DONALD W. REMBE
Donald William Rembe, the son of Ernest and Jennie (Geister) Rembe, was born November 27, 1924 in Primghar, Iowa. He attended country school and later graduated from Primghar High School in 1941. He entered the United States Army in May of 1943, serving with the 58th Armored Infantry Battalion, where he saw action in Ardennes, Rhineland and in Central Europe. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theatre Ribbon, and European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal and Meritorious Unit Award for the 8th Armored Division. He was discharged in September of 1945. On June 12, 1948, he was united in marriage to Betty Meehlhause. After their marriage the couple settled in Primghar, where Don worked for the O’Brien County REC, the Big 4 in Sheldon and before he retired in 1989, he worked for the O’Brien County Secondary Roads Department in Primghar. In his retirement, he worked summers for O’Brien County driving truck. He passed away on Friday, December 23, 2005 at the Baum Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, Iowa after being stricken at his home, reaching the age of 81 years and 26 days.
He was baptized and later confirmed at the Congregational Church in Primghar and was currently a member of the United Church of Primghar. He was the past Commander of the Chateau-Thierry Post #36 of Primghar and had served as commander of the Firing Squad, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and for 35 years was a member of the Primghar Fire Department, and had served as Secretary and Treasurer. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and being with his grandchildren.
Don leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Betty of Primghar; a daughter and her husband, Rhonda and Dennis Drey of Early, IA; two grandchildren, Jeremy Drey of Emmetsburg, IA and Kelsey Drey of Early, IA; a sister and her husband, Joan and Gene Harris of Sioux City, IA; three sisters-in-law, Irene Voss of Sheldon, IA; Luella Reinke of Spirit Lake, IA; Faye Groen and her husband, Leo of Hartley, IA; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, David and Eugene.
