Dorothy (Slugger) Louise Martin (Warren) was born July 12, 1927, to parents Ralph E. and Ruth I. Warren in Faulkton, South Dakota. Her family then moved to Sutherland, Iowa in 1940, where she attended the Sutherland schools and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1945. She worked for local businesses in Sutherland until she married Patrick L. Martin on September 2, 1951, in Jackson, Minnesota. She devoted her life as a homemaker and mother raising four children, Eugene Paul, Patrick Kelly, Jeffrey Lyle, and Russell Lewis. The family moved to Belmond, Iowa in 1960 and lived there until 1965 when they moved to Urbandale, Iowa, returning to Sutherland in November 1966. Dorothy and Patrick bought and ran for many years the Bowl Inn in Sutherland. Sutherland was always home to Dorothy and she remained there for as long as she possibly could. A move to Storm Lake made necessary by medical conditions forced her departure in 2011. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick and her son, Patrick Kelly. She is survived by her sons and their families, Gene and Patti in Incline Village, Nevada; Jeff and Cherry in Bakersfield, CA; and Russ and Caroline in Menifee, CA; 11 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. She had many lifelong friends in Sutherland and had an amazing quality to remember facts and details about all of them. She had an avid interest in music, drama and poetry. She took great joy in playing the piano for church services at North Lake Manor in Storm Lake. Dorothy was a fifty year member of the Order of the Eastern Star as well as an active member and office holder. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a devoted Chicago Cubs fan, always up on politics and current events and ready to talk in depth about any or all of them.
Dorothy passed away at the Sioux City Medical Center on February 18, 2013, from natural causes. A memorial service is to be held at the Eldridge Family Funeral Home, 217 E. Logan in Paullina, Iowa on a date in the spring to be determined. The Martin family would like thank all of you for your kind words and prayers.
