EDITH A. PARRISH
Edith Annie (Gillespie) Parrish was born south of Primghar, Iowa on July 8, 1918 to Samuel Andrew and Myrtle (Siefkin) Gillespie. She attended rural school, Dale Number 6 near her home. She graduated from Primghar High School in 1935 and attended Northern Iowa College and received her teaching certificate. She taught in Van Cleve, Iowa and later in country schools in O’Brien County. She went on to attend NBT in Sioux City and worked in several offices in Primghar. On March 17, 1948, she was united in marriage to Earl R. Parrish. The couple farmed three years in Nebraska and later farmed in Iowa, moving to a farm near Hartley in 1959. The couple moved into Hartley in 1966. She worked for many years at the O’Brien County Auditors Office retiring in 1980. Her husband preceded her in death on December 30, 1999. Edith passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 at the St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, reaching the age of 87 years, 4 months and 14 days.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hartley, Iowa. She taught Sunday School, was the secretary of her church circle, and the UMW of the church. She was a Girl Scout Leader, a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Hospital Auxiliary both in Hartley and was a member of the Friends of the Library. Edith enjoyed cooking, gardening and her grandchildren.
Edith leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Dean and his wife, Glenda Parrish of Cherokee, Iowa and Eric and his wife, Cindy Parrish of Spencer, Iowa; a daughter; Reva and her husband, Allen Harris of Riceville, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Kevin and his wife, Joy Harris; Jason Harris; Lisa and her husband, Jason Etnyre; Brian and Rebecca Parrish; and Dominic, Katherine, Christina and Megan Parrish; three brothers, Wayne Gillespie of Primghar, Iowa; Ray Gillespie of Lake Park, Iowa; Lyle and his wife, Norma Gillespie of Manitou Springs, Colorado; a sister, Bernice Iverson of Paullina, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Barbara Gillespie of Beresford, South Dakota; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two sisters, Gladys McDowell and Corrine Gillespie and a brother, Lowell Gillespie.
