Elaine Guetzlaff, age 81 of Sheldon, Iowa who passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Sanford Sheldon Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa. Elaine willed her body the University of South Dakota Medical School. Her Memorial service will be 3:00pm on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon, Iowa with the Rev. Paul Van Maaren officiating.
Visitation with the family present will be from 1:00 2:30pm Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon, Iowa. The Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sheldon is assisting the family.

Elaine Guetzlaff,

Elaine Margaret (Dieter) Guetzlaff, passed away on April 12, 2016 at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon, Iowa. She was born on July 23, 1934 in Herreid, SD to Pastor Henry E. Dieter and Lucinda (Hantelmann) Dieter. Elaine was baptized by her father on July 30, 1934. Her family moved to Atalissa, IA, then to Dubuque and Oelwein, IA. She was confirmed in Oelwein on March 21, 1948. Elaine began studying piano in third grade and continued throughout her school years becoming a gifted pianist. She graduated from Oelwein High School on May 28, 1952 as valedictorian of her class and went on to receive her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wartburg College in May of 1956. In August of 1957, she completed her Masters of Arts in Music in Piano Performance at the University of Iowa. During the summers of 1956 & 1958, she worked as a Volunteer Parish Worker in Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC. From 1957-1959, Elaine taught elementary music in Sycamore, IL.
On June 14, 1959, she was united in marriage with Conrad C. Guetzlaff in Sheffield, Iowa. Elaine became Conrads partner in ministry as they served at parishes in New Lebanon, OH and then in Iowa at rural Akron, Strawberry Point, Lytton, Clarksville and Callender. Elaine was very active in parish life. She taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, assisted in confirmation instruction, and was a Luther League sponsor. Elaine led the establishment of three morning circles, directed childrens and adult choirs, arranged hymns as anthems, was a part-time organist and was active in evangelism. She directed the Fort Dodge Conference Choral Union concerts for seven years.
Elaine taught piano lessons for many years. She made a practice of preparing a selection to perform at her students' recitals. In addition, Elaine presented several instructional recitals at public schools. From 1967-2016, she donated her services to schools and students, accompanying and helping them prepare for music contest. Along with her church ministries and music teaching, Elaine sewed much clothing for herself and her family. She loved gardening and preserving the produce which was harvested. She also treasured opportunities to host family holiday meals and enjoyed time spent at family reunions. For 50 consecutive years, she spent a week of vacation attending family Bible camp at Ingham-Okoboji Lutheran Bible Camp.
Elaine is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years, Conrad. Her children, Allan (Jill) of Clear Lake and Amy Bomgaars (Gene) of Sheldon. Her grandchildren, Jill, Anne, Katherine and Nicholas Bomgaars and David and Gretchen Guetzlaff. Her brother, Allan Dieter (Donna) of Houston, TX. Her sister-in-law, Millie Dieter of Waverly, IA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Lowell Dieter and her niece, Patricia Dieter.
