ELDEN E. HORSTMANN

Elden Elso George Horstmann, the son of George Ernest and Elsie Mae (Smidt) Horstmann was born August 29, 1922 at his parent’s farm near Sutherland, Iowa. He received his education in Calumet schools and graduating from Calumet High School in 1940. He entered the United States Army, serving in Japan at the end of World War II. He returned to the Sutherland area and farmed. On August 12, 1959, he was united in marriage to Bonnie Peterson at Ruthven, Iowa. After their marriage the couple made their home on the Horstmann family farm where Elden farmed until his death. He passed away on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at his farm home, reaching the age of 82 years, 11 months and 17 days.
He was a member of the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet and had served many terms on the church council. He was a board member of the Gaza Co-op and past president of the Sutherland Elevator board. He was a member of the Ruritan Club and the Sutherland American Legion. He enjoyed having coffee with his friends, fishing, family vacations and spending time with his family and he had a love for his family farm.
Elden leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Bonnie of Sutherland; their children, Lynn and his wife, Marilynn Horstmann of Sutherland, Iowa; Marlene and her husband, Dana Click of Paullina, Iowa; Dan and his wife, Barb Horstmann of Sutherland, Iowa; Cindy and her husband, Ron Wollenburg of DeWitt, Nebraska; Georgette and her husband, Jeff Ebel of Sutherland, Iowa; Jean Julian of Sutherland, Iowa; Jan Horstmann of Prior Lake, Minnesota; Delaine and her husband, Scott Haack of Dubuque, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; a brother, Leslie Horstmann of Kansas City, Missouri; and two sisters, Elaine Nitz of Cherokee, Iowa and Delores and her husband, Jack Ginger of Primghar, Iowa; also other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Hannah Rose; his parents; a sister-in-law, Mabel Horstmann; a brother-in-law, Bob Nitz and two nieces, Gwen and Sandra.
