ELIZABETH A. DEN HARTOG
Elizabeth Anne Den Hartog, the daughter of John and Hermina (Kleinjan) Den Hartog, was born October 20, 1904 near Lake Park, IA. Before beginning school, she moved with her family to Sheldon, IA in 1911; to the house that has been the home to Elizabeth every since. Elizabeth attended the public schools of Sheldon. After graduating from high school, Elizabeth became a teacher in a country school; she attended Sheldon College in the summer for training. She soon became a teacher of Second and Third Grade in Archer. She continued study during the summers at Cedar Falls, IA and eventually graduated from Northwestern College. She taught in the Hospers Public School for twenty-five years, teaching Second, Third and Fourth Grades in different years. While she was in high school, she became a teacher in the Sunday School of First Reformed Church in Sheldon and she did that for sixty years. She taught in public schools for forty-five years and after her retirement, she was a substitute teacher in public and parochial schools. In September of 1991, she was a resident of the Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon and in June of 2006, she moved to the Senior Care Center of the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon. Beloved teacher, aunt and friend, Elizabeth Den Hartog passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2006, at Northwest Iowa Health Center – Senior Care in Sheldon, reaching the age of 101 years, 9 months and 14 days.
She was a member of First Reformed Church in Sheldon, a member and officer of the Ladies Aid of the church; secretary-treasurer of the Kleinjan-Struyk Family Association. She traveled extensively in the United States and Canada. She was an accomplished chalk artist and a writer of poetry. Some of her poems were written in a booklet called “Beth’s Musings.” She wrote an extensive poem about the history of the First Reformed Church for its 100th anniversary. She was the compiler and editor of a family newsletter called “The Family Chat” with news and genealogical information of the Kleinjan and Struyk families. At the age 101, Elizabeth wrote the history of the Ladies Aid of First Reformed Church and led a gathering celebrating over 100 years of its history. She led the group in a study of all 150 Psalms.
She is survived by her six nieces and nephews, J. David Muyskens; Bernice Meagor; Samuel Muyskens; James Muyskens; Sabrinah Wetzler and Lois Parrott; and a step-nephew Stanley Brower; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hermina (Kleinjan) Den Hartog; her step-father, John Brower; 2 sisters, Jannetta (Den Hartog) Muyskens and Esther (Den Hartog) Dukes; and step-brothers, Joe Brower and Frank Brower.
