ELSIE E. JOHANNSEN
Elsie Emma Johannsen, the daughter of Henry and Anna (Green) Hibbing was born on January 27, 1915 at her parent’s farm home south of Paullina in Union Township of O’Brien County, Iowa. She received her education in a country school south of Paullina. On January 25, 1939, she was united in marriage to Clarence Johannsen at her parent’s home south of Paullina. After their marriage the couple settled on a farm one half mile south of Gaza, Iowa where they farmed for many years. Her husband preceded her in death on February 2, 1982 in Sioux City, Iowa. Elsie continued to make her home on the family farm until moving to the Paullina Care Center on December 9, 2002 and later to the Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn, Iowa in November of 2008. She passed away at Prairie View on Thursday, April 1, 2010 reaching the age of 95 years, 2 months and 4 days.
She was baptized on April 4, 1915 and later confirmed on May 27, 1928, she was a lifelong member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. She was also a long time active member of the Ladies Aid of the church. She enjoyed traveling, her garden with many flowers, playing cards, crocheting and playing games with her grandchildren. A special time was watching her great-grandchildren on an Easter egg hunt.
Elsie is survived by four sons and their wives, Rodney and Arlys Johannsen of Paullina; Marlin and Carla Johannsen of Waterloo, Iowa; Loren and Elaine Johannsen and Bill and Bev Johannsen all of Paullina; a daughter and her husband, Ladonna and Dan Wittrock of Primghar; 16 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; also many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers, Herbert and Delbert in infancy, Elmer, Alvin and Wilbert; and one sister, Mildred.
