ETHEL GERTRUDE (MOORE) BORDEN

Ethel Gertrude (Moore) Borden, daughter of Ira Clark and Mary Ellen (Yearous) Moore, was born on April 28, 1927 in Volga City, IA. She attended Volga City School and graduated from high school there in 1945. She was united in marriage to Thomas Glenn Borden of Volga City, IA on December 22, 1945 in Norman, OK. Tom was serving his country in the Navy and Ethel took the train to Norman, OK to get married. After Tom was discharged, they moved to Cedar Falls, IA, for Tom to attend the Iowa State Teachers College. In the fall of 1951, they moved to Sanborn, IA in order for Tom to begin his teaching career. Ethel kept busy taking care of her family, attending every band and choir concert and every ballgame her kids were in, whatever sport. She also babysat for Nick Grauer for several years. She sold Avon for a number of years and usually attained Presidents Club status. She was a founding member of the Miono Club, a lifetime member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, taught Sunday School, was an officer in UMW and a member of Eastern Star of Sanborn. After Toms retirement, Tom and Ethel wintered in Alamo, TX, at an RV Park where they made many good friends. They enjoyed his early retirement and had ten wonderful years of traveling. One of the most memorable trips was a six-week trip over the Al-Can Highway to Alaska with Ethels sister, Evelyn and her husband, Jay Bruns. On January 7, 2016, after a two week stay in the hospital, Ethel entered the Hospice Suite at Sibley Specialty Care where she died from complications due to renal failure.
Ethel is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Sharon Borden, Maple Lake, MN; Scott and Ruth Ann Borden of Sanborn, IA; Douglas and Aaron Borden of Primghar, IA; her daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Rich Vander Werff of Sanborn, IA; as well as her loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Glenn Borden in 2002; her parents, one son, Terry Thomas; one infant daughter, Marsha Sue; and her six Siblings and their spouses.
Ethel will be remembered fondly for her great wit, her homemade bread, buns and cinnamon rolls. She was an avid reader, crossword puzzle wizard and an accomplished Scrabble player. She will be remembered for her laughter and many kindnesses.
