GERTRUDE J. VAN GORP
Gertrude Johanna Van Gorp, the daughter of John and Grace (Koerselman) Dokter was born on September 9, 1919 in Middleburg, Iowa. Gertrude received her education from a country school. She married Marvin Van Gorp on June 25, 1940 in rural Middleburg. The couple farmed in rural Hospers moving into Hospers in 1970. Gertrude worked at Hollanders 5 & 10 store and Ben Franklin as a clerk. The couple then moved to Sheldon in 1998. Marvin preceded her in death in September of 2000. She remained at home until moving to Fieldrcrest in 2008. Gertrude passed away on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at the Sanford Sheldon Hospital reaching the age of 93 years, 2 months and 5 days.
She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Hospers. Her family has always been an important part of her life. She was known for her hospitality. She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, the piano and organ, sewing, the Minnesota Twins, having fun, volunteering and wintering in Mesa, Arizona.
Gertrude is survived by her children, Jim and his wife Audrey Van Gorp of Orange City, Iowa, Grayce and her husband Ron Berg of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Rose and her husband Norlan Top of Arnolds Park, Iowa, Nancy and her husband Richard Colbert of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Don Van Gorp of Maple Grove, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren; one brother Gary and his wife Liz Dokter of Sioux Center, Iowa; one sister Gerdena Sikma of Sioux Center, Iowa; special friend Melvin Brands of Sheldon, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandson, David Berg, sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Jake Vander Griend.
