Grace was baptized at the Lutheran Church in Paullina, attended school in Sutherland, and was confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland. She had fond memories of living on the farm northeast of Sutherland and later moving into town. She married Leonard Claus Ewoldt at Bethel Lutheran Church on February 14, 1939; and they farmed in the Hartley area until retiring to Spencer. They wintered for 35 years in southern Texas and then moved to a condo in Primghar.
Grace’s maternal grandfather, August Karl Egdorf and his parents, Karl Egdorf and Sophia Christina (Kethig) had immigrated from Pomerania, Germany in 1876. Her maternal grandmother, Augustine Steva (Zoch) Egdorf was from Niles, Illinois, and married August in Jackson County, Iowa, in 1882. They farmed near Granville and Archer. Her paternal grandfather, John Puhrmann Jr. also immigrated from Telkov, Germany, with his parents in 1863. Her paternal grandmother, Wilhelmina (Mertens) Puhrmann, immigrated with her parents in 1867 from Lensen, Germany. They also farmed.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter-in-law, Joyce Ewoldt of Spencer; her son, James Ewoldt, and his wife, Bridie, of Arden Hills, Mn.; her daughter, Gale Kruger, and her husband, Lyle, of Cherokee; her daughter, Connie Huffman, and her husband, Judd, of Primghar, Ia.; and her daughter, Patricia Rowray, and her husband, Rickie, of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; eighteen grandchildren: Lisa, Lynette, Daniel, Crystal, Brian, Valerie, Sherri, Stephanie, Doyle, Daniel, Shelly, Daran, Regan, Brooke, Paige, Chad, Randy, and Robina; twenty-seven great-grandchildren: Lindsey, Emily, Homia, Thomasia, Stephen, Christopher, Duncan, Eric, Lillianna, Melody, Chelsie, Christopher, Mason, Noah, Carter, Justine, Tobias, Raef, Houston, Bo, Brianne, Dillon, Addison, Benjamin, Nathan, Brooklyn, and Miranda; and three great-great-grandchildren: Ian, Aiden and Emma; along with other relatives and friends.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard (June 30, 2011); her parents; four sisters: Dorothy (2 mo), Marlys (1 yr), Hazel and Esther; one brother: Earl; and two sons: Daniel Ray Ewoldt (infancy) and Dennis Lee Ewoldt (1995).
