HELEN E. PAULING
Helen Eleanor Paulingwas born in Paullina, Iowa on August 3, 1926 to Marvin and Mabel Smith, the oldest of three daughters. Helen was baptized at the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina. She attended school at Dale No 9 and graduated from Paullina High School in 1944. She was active in 4-H and had the unique honor of being the first girl to show a grand champion steer at the Clay County Fair in 1939. Helen married Lynford Pauling September 5, 1944. Many of their years together were spent at Paulings Grocery and Market in Paullina. They moved to Hartley in 2001 to be near their daughter and husband. Helen moved to the Community Memorial Health Center Assisted Living in 2011 and then to the Care Center the end of that year where she passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2015 reaching the age of 88 years, 11 months and 22 days.
Helen was active with civic and church activities including serving on the Paullina Library Board at the time of building the present library; co-chairman of her churchs 100th anniversary; was on the first OBrien County Federated Club School Art Contest Committee; enjoyed many high school sporting events and was an avid Hawkeye Fan. Much of her time was devoted to working in their grocery store from 1965 to 1984 and during this time she kept a motto board in the window for passersby to enjoy. The next 17 years Helen was a library aide in the South OBrien Schools where she thoroughly enjoyed the kids. After moving to Hartley she volunteered 2 years at HMS listening to first graders read.
Helen later joined Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina and was currently a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Hartley since 2002 and enjoyed the Ladies Aid group, and P.E.O. Her hobbies included crafts, writing, drawing, and was an excellent cook with a collection of many cookbooks. Her family and friends were her pride and joy; and in these last days was known for her wave to all those she passed in the CMHC halls.
She is survived by her children, Dennis (Sharon) Pauling; Austin, TX and Sue (Mark) Schulz, Hartley, IA; 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; Kristen (Trek) Doyle and son, Cason; Jennifer Garcia and daughters, Abbey and Mia all of Austin, TX; Christopher (Kami) Schulz and Kyler, Kiana ,Karson of Denison, IA; Dr. Todd Schulz and Ella, Jackson, Ethan of Ankeny, IA and Sarah (Eric) Jordan and Miles and Avah of Austin, TX; a sister, Frances Burgess of Denison, IA; a brother-in-law, Brian McGregor of Denver, CO; also other relatives and friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Lynford on January 7, 2005; grandson, David Pauling in 1992; parents, one sister, Margaret Ann McGregor and a brother-in-law, Don Burgess.
