HELEN E. SELK

Helen Elsie Selk, the daughter of Orson and Elsie (Heinze) Negus was born February 26, 1926 in Buena Vista County near Aurelia, Iowa. She received her education in a country school and later graduated from Sutherland High School in 1944. She was united in marriage to Burdette J. Selk on August 14, 1946 in Primghar, Iowa. After their marriage the couple made their home in Sutherland, where Helen was a homemaker raising her children. The couple moved to a farm near Sutherland in 1964, where she helped her husband farm and was a 4-H leader and helped operate the Youth Center in Sutherland. They moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1972, where she managed apartment complexes until the couple's retirement in 1988, when they moved back to Sutherland. Her husband preceded her in death on July 24, 2000 in Sutherland. Helen continued to make her home in Sutherland. She passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, reaching the age of 83 years, 8 months and 15 days.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sutherland and the United Methodist Women. She was a former member of the Women’s Club and the American Legion Auxiliary in Sutherland. She enjoyed gardening, ceramics, china painting and was known for being very artistic.
Helen is survived by two daughters, Jean Pingel and Judi Jackson both of Sutherland; five grandchildren, Tara, Eric, Erin, Lindsey and Kimberly; seven great-grandchildren, Wade, Jordan, Kjersten, Annika, Kennedy, Kale and Rylan; five brothers and their wives, James and Jeanne Negus of Newton, Iowa; Robert and Nina Negus and Roger and Carole Negus all of Sutherland, Iowa; Merle and Diane Negus of Kingsley, Iowa and David and Cathy Negus of Tilden, Nebraska; three sisters, Shirley and her husband, Jerry Baier of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Janet Negus of Springfield, Illinois and Donna and her husband, Kevin Dighton of Davenport, Iowa; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Steven Burdette Selk on Jan. 3, 1998; her parents and one sister, Marjorie Negus.
