Helen Marie Vlaming the daughter of Tom and Jennie (Ruisch) Vlieger was born January 18, 1924 near Hospers, Iowa. The family moved to the Sheldon, Iowa area where she was raised and received her education in country school at Carroll # 2. On November 1, 1945, she was united in marriage to Martin Vlaming at her parent’s home near Hospers. After their marriage the couple lived near Sanborn for several years before purchasing a farm near Sutherland, Iowa in 1955. The couple farmed for many years near Sutherland. Her husband preceded her in death in 1993 after which she moved to Primghar to make her home. She moved to the Sutherland Care Center in July of 2012. She passed away at the care center on Sunday, October 14, 2012 reaching the age of 88 years, 8 months and 26 days.
She was currently attending the American Reformed Church in Primghar. Over the years she was active in her church, Sunday School, Bible School, Woman’s Society, where she held various offices. She was active in Federated Women’s Club and held various offices. She also was secretary for over 20 years for the O’Brien County Historical Society. She enjoyed quilting, traveling especially attending Elder Hostels in the United States and foreign countries.
Helen is survived by her four children, Ronald Vlaming of Peterson, Iowa; Linda Vlaming of Des Moines, Iowa; Sue and her husband, Dan Grote of Ashton, Iowa and Nancy and her husband, Steve Conrad of Fort Dodge, Iowa; also four grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, a sister and her husband, Margene and Ralph Reeder of Annapolis, Maryland; two sister-in-laws, Mary Vlieger of Eau Claire, Wisconsin and Yvonne Vlieger of Phoenix, Arizona; a brother-in-law and his wife, Frank and Ula Calsbeek of Grand Rapids, Michigan; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin; her parents, a sister, Luella Calsbeek; two brothers, Lester and Marvin Vlieger.
