HENRY VANDER PLOEG
Henry Bernard Vander Ploeg, the son of William and Pearl (Wesselink) Vander Ploeg was born October 14, 1924 on a farm near Maurice, Iowa. He received his education near Maurice and when the family moved near Hospers he continued his education graduating from Hospers High School. While in Hospers he worked for Hoffman Construction for a year and was a hired hand for TeGrotenhuis Brothers on their farm. He was called into the Army during W.W. II serving from May of 1945 until November of 1946. Henry furthered his education at Central College in Pella and for a year and a half at Western Theological Seminary. On January 30, 1953 he was united in marriage to Gertie Vanden Brink in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After their marriage the couple farmed near Sheldon until 1965. Then they farmed a year near Ashton before moving to a farm south of Paullina where the couple lived and farmed from 1966 until 2009. The couple returned to Sheldon to Fieldcrest Assisted Living to make their home. Henry passed away on Saturday December 29, 2012 at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center reaching the age of 88 years 2 months and 15 days.
He was a member of the Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in rural Meriden where he had been a trustee and taught Sunday school. He was also a member of the Russell West Post of the American Legion of Paullina. Henry took great pride in his garden, and was especially proud of his many tulips and gladiolas. Family was very important to him, and any opportunity he had to see his grandchildren and great grandchildren always brought a smile to his face.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of nearly 60 years, Gertie VanderPloeg; his six children, Dianne (Jerry) Hallstrom of River Falls, Wisconsin, David (Peggy) VanderPloeg of Paullina, Timothy (Sherry) VanderPloeg of Altoona, Mark VanderPloeg of Spirit Lake, Jonathan (Pam) VanderPloeg of Paullina, and Daniel (Lynne) VanderPloeg of DesMoines; 20 grandchildren, Tracy (Brian) Wohlhuter, Darcy Hallstrom (fiancé Jeremy Sydnor); Kent Miller, Bob (Renita) Miller, Jodi (Hernando) Quintero; Shayla (Joshua) Hood, Eric (Kayla) VanderPloeg; Stronz, Keaton, Caleb, and Drew VanderPloeg; Ryan (Kassi) VanderPloeg and Cory (Chrysta) VanderPloeg; LauraBeth VanderPloeg, Emily (Andrew) Webster, Jacob (Breanna) VanderPloeg, Benjamin, Zachary, Natalie and Olivia VanderPloeg; and 15 great-grandchildren, Isaac and Alex Wohlhuter; Mikayla and Blake Miller, Kyra and Kaitlin Miller, Andres and Mateo Quintero; J.T., Emmie, Zola, Piper and Devine Hood; and Ella Dungan and Clayton VanderPloeg.
Survivors also include two sisters, Henrietta Bulthuis and Thelma Pott, two brothers, Chap (Cia) VanderPloeg and Bob VanderPloeg, sister-in-law Gladys (Henry) Kroon, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by his parents William and Pearl VanderPloeg, two brothers in infancy, parents-in-law Gerrit and Tracy VandenBrink, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in law, Ray Bulthuis, Pete Pott, Henrietta VanderPloeg, and Ceel and Ruth VandenBrink.
