Henry Marion Mastbergen, the son of Arie and Carrie (Buysman) Mastbergen, was born August 10, 1918, in Archer, Iowa. He received his education in the Archer Consolidated School. Henry worked with his father on the farm before joining the United States Army during World War II and was discharged as a staff sergeant. On January 27, 1948, he was united in marriage to Kathaleen Bloemendaal in the United Methodist Church in Sheldon, Iowa. The young couple resided near Matlock where Henry farmed and raised cattle until moving into Sheldon in 1981; Henry retired from farming in 1983, after which he enjoyed winters in Phoenix, AZ. Henry passed away on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon, reaching the age of 86 years, 6 months and 9 days.
He was a member and a deacon of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. He was the president of the Matlock Elevator Board; was on the board of directors for the Sheldon Farmers Oil Co-op; the Lyon-Sioux Rural Water Board; and the Citizens State Bank Board for 30 years. He was dedicated to his family, loved nature and the land that he farmed. He enjoyed golfing, square dancing, playing cards, traveling and taking care of his yard.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 57 years, Kathaleen of Sheldon; 3 daughters and their husbands, Holly and Dennis Janssen of Frankfort, IL; Bonnie and Jeffry Mitchell of Burnsville, MN; Connie and Larry Van Meeteren of Sheldon, IA; 9 grandchildren, Rachel Lorenz; Robin Basselin; Kiel Janssen; Todd Mitchell; Grant Mitchell; Angela Schuiteman; Julia, Kayla and Steven Van Meeteren; 3 great-grandchildren, Risa and Karis Basselin; Reid Lorenz; 5 brothers and sisters, Lambert Mastbergen of Sheldon, IA; Irene Ten Clay of Sanborn, IA; Carrie and her husband, Evert Reuvers of Primghar, IA; Charles and his wife, Marjorie Mastbergen and Don and his wife, Idelle Mastbergen all of Sheldon, IA; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers and sisters, Jeanette Zevenbergen, John and Arie Mastbergen and Henrietta Langstraat.
