HOWARD D. VAN MEETEREN

Howard Donald Van Meeteren, the son of Donald and Mary (Vos) Van Meeteren, was born November 18, 1927 in Boyden, Iowa. He moved to Sheldon as a child with his parents and it was there that he received his education. After completing school, he worked for his father in the Gainey & Sterenberg Hardware Store in Sheldon. In 1946, Howard joined the United States Navy and was Honorably Discharged in 1947. After the service, he returned home and went to work with his dad at Don’s Sheet Metal. On November 21, 1948, Howard was united in marriage to Verdella “Del” Willert in Verdi,Minnesota and the young couple made their home in Sheldon, Iowa. Howard eventually took over the business in 1966, when his father passed away. Howard retired on January 1, 1988, when he sold the business to his son Brad. He passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon, Iowa, reaching the age of 77 years, 5 months and 23 days.
Howard was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon and had served on the church board. He was also a member of the Sheldon Eagles, the Sheldon Country Club, the O’Brien County Sportsman Club, and had served on the city council for 9 years. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, but most of all he enjoyed being down at the shop, even after he retired.
Howard is survived by his wife, Verdella “Del” of Sheldon; and their two sons, Brad Van Meeteren of Sheldon, Iowa and Bruce Van Meeteren and his wife, Julie of Glenwood, Iowa; 2 granddaughters, Brooke and Breanna; his mother, Mary Vellinga of Sheldon, Iowa; two sisters and their spouses, Dolores and John Kruger and Darlene and Ervin Verrips all of Sheldon, Iowa; a step brother, Mark Vellinga and his wife, Carmen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Van Meeteren and his step-father, John Vellinga; a brother and his wife, LeRoy “Blink” and Velma Van Meeteren.
