A graveside service for Joan Starrett Scott, age 78, of Southern Pines, NC and formerly of Sheldon, IA, who passed away at her home in Southern Pines, NC, on Monday, September 12, 2005; her services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2005, at 1:00 pm at the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon, Iowa.
The Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sheldon is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Scott was born Oct. 3, 1926, in Sheldon, Iowa, the middle of three children of the late Grace Schofield Savage and Raymond L. Starrett. In 1890, the Starrett family founded Starrett Bros. Department Store which remained in operation in Sheldon until the 1950s when the business relocated to Arizona and continued operating until the 1980s.
Joan graduated in 1948 from Grinnell College where she met her husband, James A. Scott, a journalist. With their two children, James and Amy, the family lived in Germany from 1955-1960 and in Algeria from 1963-1965 when her husband was an officer with the U.S. Information Agency. For many years the Scotts lived in Washington, D.C. and in New York City. In New York, she worked as an administrative assistant for the City of New York. In Washington, she was a staff assistant in Congressman Kika de la Garza’s office for four years.
In 1984, the Scotts purchased The Country Bookshop in Southern Pines, NC, which Joan continued to own and operate until her death. Long active in the League of Women Voters wherever she lived, Joan continued her community involvement in Southern Pines and also served on a number of boards including Southern Pines Library, Ruth Pauley Lecture Series, Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities, North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame, and Sunrise Theatre Preservation Group. She was an active member of the Southern Pines Business Association.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Scott of Des Moines, Iowa and her sister, Marge Peterson of Medford Lakes, NJ.
Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1995, and by her son, Jimmy, who died in 1964.
