He married Shirley Pottebaum on Jan. 3, 1953 at St. Mary’s church in Remsen, IA and spent the next two years serving his country with the United States Army. Upon returning to Iowa after his service, he worked for a farmer near Sutherland, IA for one season and then worked at Sheldon’s bean mill until starting to farm east of Primghar. He was a member of St. Joseph Parish, O’Brien County and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. Joe enjoyed attending farm sales both land and machinery. He kept up with that until 2020 when COVID limited his outings. He loved to have coffee with friends and neighbors and was always ready for a party. His birthdays were the highlight of his year every year and though he was hospitalized for pneumonia in November 2019, did get to enjoy his 90th birthday party with many friends and family on December 7, 2019. His 92nd birthday was a card shower, but he did enjoy having lots of cards read to him.
