DONNA “JOYCE” BOOGERD

Donna “Joyce” Boogerd, the daughter of Jess and Ruth (Hays) Verhoef, was born June 20, 1929 in Prairie View, Kansas. She received her education and graduated from Prairie View High School in 1947. She attended Central College for one year and then attended Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing in Des Moines, Iowa, where she graduated in September, 1952. Joyce was united in marriage to Gerrit “Gary” R. Boogerd on June 6, 1952 in Pella, Iowa. Her nursing career was always an important part of her life where ever they lived. She began her nursing career in Holland, Michigan while Gary attended Western Theological Seminary. They served in the mission field for the Reformed Church of America in the hills of Kentucky where Joyce was a nurse and midwife. Her career also included hospital nursing where surgery was her favorite. She served as Director of Nursing at Osceola Community Hospital and on the nursing staff at Village Northwest Unlimited. She completed her career as Director of Nursing at Parkview Manor in Ellsworth Minnesota. Gary and Joyce enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 9 years. In 2001, they moved from their home of 31 years in Little Rock to Sheldon, Iowa. Gary preceded her in death on April 4, 2010. Joyce remained in her home until August, 2010 before moving to the Sibley Nursing & Rehab Center in Sibley, Iowa where she passed away on Saturday, April 13, 2013 reaching the age of 83 years, 9 months and 24 days.
She was a member of Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon. She was also a member of the Little Rock American Legion Auxiliary and the Martha Rachel Circle of the Salem Reformed Church in Little Rock. Joyce enjoyed knitting, word and jigsaw puzzles, plants, journaling, making Christmas ornaments for family, and collecting antiques.
Joyce’s life will be cherished by her four daughters and their spouses: Ruth and David Hobson of Lake Park, Iowa; Laurie and Russ Forbes of Lone Tree, Iowa; Rebecca and Butch Anderson of Sheldon; Lois and Kenny Schilling of Little Rock, Iowa; fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, a sister and her husband, Avis and Ron Moulton of California; and other relatives and friends.
