Jude Joseph Culligan was born in Phoenix, Arizona, on February 21, 1928, to Anna Harrington Culligan and Emmet J. Culligan, a businessman and the original Culligan Man. The family moved often as Judes father engaged in business. They settled for a time in La Grange, Illinois, near Chicago, where Jude attended elementary and middle school. The family moved to San Bernardino, California, when Jude was about to start high school, but he returned to the Midwest to attend Loras Academy in Dubuque. After graduating from Loras, Jude attended Loyola University (now Loyola Marymount) in Los Angeles, graduating in 1950 with a degree in English and philosophy. As a young man, Jude held a number of odd jobs, including stints working in the vineyards in California, at the cafeteria of Howard Hughes Aircraft Company in Culver City, at a steak joint called Frenchies in Montana, at various Culligan Soft Water dealerships, and as a teacher. Jude also spent some time as a Trappist monk at a monastery in Utah. After leaving the monastery, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Germany. His life changed when he met a fetching schoolteacher named Marjorie Lodzinski at a church social gathering in San Bernardino. They were married in 1960, and had three childrenMary, Judy, and Chrisbefore moving in the mid-1960s to Owatonna, Minnesota, and not long after to Sheldon, Iowa, where he ran the Culligan Soft Water dealership for twenty years. Their fourth child, Ginger, was born in Sheldon. In later years, Jude worked as a delivery man for Sheldon Auto, among other jobs. Jude was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Sheldon.
Jude is survived by wife, Marjorie and daughter, Judy of Sheldon; his son, Chris, grandson Cody, and granddaughter Hailey of La Farge, WI; his daughter, Ginger, her husband, Clarke Laszlo, and grandsons, Joseph and Samuel of Ashby, MA; sister, Kate of Edina, MN; and brother, Gerry (Fr. Kevin) at Holy Hill near Hubertus, WI.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Anna, brothers, Tom and John, and sisters, Mary and Anna Marie.
