Katherine Jo “Kathy” Den Besten, the daughter of Billie Jo and Shirley (Larson) Newland, was born May 1, 1956 in Onawa, IA. She grew up a Military Brat and graduated from West High School in Sioux City, IA in 1974. Kathy worked for Bernstein Law in Sioux City for 25 years; she then worked for the United States Probation Office in Sioux City for 4 years before retiring in 2006. She was united in marriage to Harlan “Butch” Den Besten on June 26, 2004 at Stone State Park in Sioux City and they made their home southwest of Boyden. Her husband, Butch preceded her in death on March 12, 2008 in Boyden, Iowa. In June of 2008, Kathy moved to Rock Valley, Iowa, she passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2008 at her home in Rock Valley, reaching the age of 52 years, 2 months and 12 days.
Kathy was a member of Middleburg Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg, Iowa. She was a professional ceramicist; winning many high level awards, including Best in Show. She became a teacher of ceramics and started her own business the “Cluttered Closet”. Her business was not just limited to ceramics, but to porcelain dolls, event cakes which included weddings, she also did floral arrangements. Kathy was active with the Girl Scouts for 9 years and she was also a certified clown “Rainbow”.
Kathy leaves to cherish her memory a sister, Debra Newland of Sioux City, IA; five step-children, Lynelle Schemmel of Salem, SD; Jeanie and her husband, Danny Maae of Hull, IA; Mark and his wife, Angie Den Besten of Boyden, IA; Tyler Den Besten of Boyden, IA and Chantel Den Besten of Rock Rapids, IA; eleven step-grandchildren, Amanda, Ashley and Amber Schemmel; Dustin, Bret, Michaela, Alexis and Keilani Maae; Alexandra, Hunter and Taiten Den Besten; a mother-in-law, Wilhelmina Den Besten of Doon, IA; three aunts and an uncle, a sister-in-law and her husband, Linda and Ed Van Der Brink; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a sister, Verda Newland and a brother, Erick Newland.
