Kenneth Edwin Roos, the son of Peter and Dena Gertrude (Van Roekel) Roos, was born July 30, 1926 on a farm near Newkirk, IA. He received his education at a country school near Newkirk, and then worked on the family farm. In June of 1944, a tornado completely destroyed the homestead; all nine members of the family were unharmed. The Roos family lived in a chicken coop for several months before moving to a farm near Ashton. In April of 1945, Ken was drafted into the United States Army during World War II; he completed his basic training at Camp Livingston in Louisiana and was later stationed on the Island of Okinawa from November of 1945 until his discharge in December of 1946. Ken returned home and continued farming. On September 16, 1949, he was united in marriage to Berdena Edith Miedema in Sheldon, Iowa. The young couple moved to a farm east of Sheldon in the spring of 1951, where Ken operated a grain and dairy farm. In March of 1999, they moved into Sheldon. In 2001, Ken received his honorary high school diploma from Sheldon High School during a program for all Veterans serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Berdena on October 19, 2004. Ken remained at home until June of 2008, when he moved to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon and in September of 2009, Ken became a resident of Sanford Sheldon Senior Care. He passed away on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at the Senior Care in Sheldon, reaching the age of 83 years, 4 months and 9 days.
Ken was a member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon, where he served on the Consistory as an Elder, Deacon and Sunday school teacher; he was also a member of the McGlothlen-Cowie Post #145 of the American Legion of Sheldon. He was a past Trustee for Floyd Township of O’Brien County and a past member of the Sheldon Prairie Queen Kiwanis. He enjoyed farming, reading and visiting with family and friends.
Ken leaves to cherish his memory six children and their spouses, Bryan & Lori Roos of Mahtomedi, MN; Daryl & Sharron Roos of Sheldon; Jana & Rick Hanson of Dell Rapids, SD; Lenae & Robbie Harris of Sioux City; Kent & Katharine Roos of Deephaven, MN; Jay & Peggy Roos of Minneapolis, MN; 12 grandchildren, Renae Roos, Travis Roos, Rochelle and her husband, Joshua Hughes; Peter and his wife, Jenn Roos; Lesley Roos, Ryan, Alex, Jonathan and Jeremy Hanson, Clara Roos, Charlotte and Eli Roos; 3 great-grandchildren: Maddilyn Roos, Jaxon Hughes and Paul Roos; 4 sisters and a brother, Nelvera Schiebout of Orange City; Maxine & Raymond Heemstra of Bartlesville, OK; Gladys Kessel of Byron Center, MI; Harry Ostendorf of Oshkosh, WI; Arlene & Chuck Lubbers of Orange City; and Edwin & Beverly Roos of Ashton. FINAL HARVEST

He was bound to the land from the day of his birth
His roots anchored deep in the fertile earth
Nurtured, sustained, by the soil he grew
And his life, like his furrows, ran straight and true.

In faith, each spring, he planted the seeds
In hope, to reap his family’s needs
With patience, he waited for the harvest to come
To gather the fruits of his labor home.

Ever turning seasons, the years sped past
Till the final harvest came at last
Then claimed anew by beloved sod
He was gathered home to be with God.
