Lance Lane Bates was born on June 17, 1963 in Spencer, Iowa. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1982. After graduation he attended Southwestern Technical Institute graduating in the powerline program. He worked for the City of Primghar as a lineman, B & K Plumbing and Heating, was the Superintendent of Utilities for the City of Paullina and Black Hills Energy as a gas service technician. He was united in marriage to Sharon Kearney on September 20, 1996 in Primghar, Iowa. Lance passed away on January 24, 2021 at MercyOne Medical in Primghar reaching the age of 57 years, 7 months, and 7 days.
Lance had a passion for restoring Chevy & GMC trucks. He had many hobbies that included wood working, fixing small engines, as he was known as Mr. Fix-it and if he couldn’t fix it, he would tell you to junk it. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, golfing, snowmobiling, music, riding horses with his dad and spending time in the shop with friends. He was a member of Paullina Lions Club. He adored his granddaughters as he was known as “papa”.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Sharon; son, Travis Bates of Estherville; two granddaughters, Tatum, and Teagan Bates; mother, Linda Crayne of Estherville; stepmother, Sharon Bates of Britt, Iowa; brothers, Loren (Julie) Bates of Estherville, Iowa, and James (Janice) Bates of Sheridan, Indiana; mother-in-law, Mary Kearney of Sioux City. He was also survived by aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
Lance was preceded in death by his father and father-in-law.
To all my shop friends, I enjoyed all the conversations, laughs and drinks.
