LILLIAN MARIE CHRISTINA (JOHNSON) STRAMPE

Lillian Marie Christina (Johnson) Strampe was born November 1, 1917 at home near Aurelia, Iowa, the daughter of Axel and Amanda (Magnuson) Johnson. She was confirmed in 1932 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alta, Iowa. She was the eldest daughter of six siblings and lived on the family farm until her graduation from Aurelia High School in 1935. She attended Samuels Cosmetology School in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated in 1939. She was employed at Home Beauty Shop in Paullina; Lillie’s Beauty Salon in Aurelia and later at Honsbruch Drug Store in Aurelia.
On October 3, 1941, she was united in marriage to Martin Strampe. In 1942, Martin entered the U.S. Army and just three days after he left, their daughter Janet was born. Lillian and Janet lived on the farm with Lillian’s parents while Martin was serving overseas during WW II. When Martin returned three years later, they purchased a home in Aurelia and in 1946 their son, Blaine, was born. Martin and Lillian lived in Aurelia until 1970 when they moved to Primghar. Lillian was very active in her church circle and other church activities. She and Martin were long-time members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee and later Grace Lutheran Church in Primghar. Lillian was also a member of the hospital and American Legion auxiliaries.
Lillian was a talented seamstress and quilter. She also loved to crochet and do candle wicking. Taking care of her home and family and entertaining relatives and friends were very important to her. She was a gifted cook and baker. She delighted in inviting guests for an evening of visiting and dining and everyone felt welcome and comfortable in her home. Lillian’s life was built around her husband and children and nothing gave her more pleasure than the accomplishments and successes of her family. This carried over in later years when she became a grandmother and then a great-grandmother. She loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and delighted in spending time with them and playing games.
Lillian and Martin spent many hours dancing together. It was one of the great joys of their life. They belonged to a dance club and made many special friends during that time. Also, playing cards and fishing were a big part of their life together. Martin and Lillian celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren, relatives and friends in attendance. It was a special celebration that both of them remembered with great fondness through the following years.
Due to declining health, Lillian chose to move to the Lakes area in 2004 to be closer to her son and daughter-in-law. Last year, Lillian observed her 90th birthday with a celebration that was attended by over 60 relatives and friends. It was a wonderful and memorable day for her. Another milestone was meeting her newest great-grandchild, Anna Catherine Doud, who traveled to Iowa from California at the age of seven months just to meet her great-grandma. It was a day Lillian wasn’t sure would ever happen and it made her so very happy. Lillian Strampe passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at Hilltop Care Center, Spirit Lake Iowa, reaching the age of 90 years, 9 months and 11 days.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Martin in 2000 and siblings, Art Johnson, Verner Johnson, Kenny Johnson, Lois Jons and Clayton Johnson. Also, a sister, Anna, died in early childhood.
Lillian is survived by her daughter, Janet Doud of San Marino, CA and son, Blaine (Sheryl) Strampe of Spirit Lake, IA. She is also survived by grandchildren, Adam Doud and his fiancée Sylvia Lang of San Diego, CA; Alan (Kristen) Doud of Bakersfield, CA; Bryan (Doreen) Miller of St. Michael, MN; Wendy (Neil) Von Arb of Apple Valley, MN; and Kevin (Kim) Miller of Farmington, MN. Great-grandchildren are, Anna Doud, Michael Miller, Jami Hoffert, Olivia Miller, Emily Krenik and Claire Krenik. Also surviving are three sisters-in-law, Elva Johnson of Cherokee, IA; Ella Johnson of Storm Lake, IA and Patricia Johnson of Dunlap, IL; many nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
