LILLIAN S. EHLERS
Lillian Sarah Ehlers, the daughter of John J. and Sarah (Hofer) Gross, was born November 7, 1921, in Freeman, South Dakota. She received her education in Freeman and graduated from Freeman High School. On December 24, 1942, she was united in marriage to Marcel “Shorty” Ehlers in Omaha, Nebraska. After her husband was discharged from the Army, the couple moved to Sheldon. While in Sheldon, Lillian was employed initially as a waitress. Next, she worked for many years at Super Valu and later Joyce’s Grocery Store as a checker and bookkeeper. After her retirement, she volunteered at Oak Park in Sheldon. Her husband preceded her in death on April 19, 1985, in Sheldon, Iowa. Lillian continued to make her home in Sheldon and moved to the Christian Retirement Home on July 1, 2008. On April 28, 2011, Lillian was admitted to the Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Later, she was transferred to the Sheldon Hospital. On May 25, 2011, she moved to Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon. She passed away on Saturday June 4, 2011, reaching the age of 89 years, 6 months and 27 days.
Lillian was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Sheldon. She enjoyed playing cards and games, especially with her family. She also enjoyed walking, exercising, reading magazines, shopping, listening to music, caring for her many plants, and eating out. Her last suggestion to family was to go out for a prime rib dinner.
Lillian leaves to cherish her memory one daughter, Karen and her husband, Bennett Bruxvoort, of George, Iowa; three grandchildren, Tamie and her husband, Quintin Van Es; Deb and her husband, Michael De Jong and Troy and his wife, Tina Bruxvoort; ten great grandchildren, Travis, Mitchell and Cassie Van Es; Matthew and Josie De Jong; Connor and Jenna Horrocks; and Cailie, Cody, and Alex Bruxvoort; three sisters-in-law, Mary DuBois of Des Moines, Iowa and Elizabeth and Gertie Gross of Freeman, South Dakota; also other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two infant children, Connie and Ronnie; great granddaughter, Christina De Jong; her parents, four brothers, and four sisters.
