Marcella Leone (Niebuhr) Ewoldt was born July 14, 1927, on a farm 3½ miles west of Paullina, to Walter and Irene (Fiddelke) Niebuhr. She received her elementary education at the Zion Lutheran School, graduated from Paullina High School on May 14, 1945, and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. On June 20, 1948, she was united in marriage to Lee E. Ewoldt and they spent their entire life in Paullina at 108 South Rutledge. Marcella worked in the high school office for 27 years before her retirement in 1992 and enjoyed being a surrogate mother to many students. In August 1998, she started working in the Paullina Public Library until retiring once again in August 2001.

She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church where she had served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, and served on various committees. She was a 50 year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was also a member of Home Group for many years. She contributed to the community by helping with the planning for both the Centennial and Quasquicentennial celebrations. She researched most of the school information for the Centennial history book and also contributed to the Quasquicentennial history book. The community selected Marcella to be the Yesteryear Queen for the Quasquicentennial. Over the years she enjoyed playing cards—especially bridge. In order to develop bridge partners, she taught bridge to several friends. Marcella enjoyed all types of music: bluegrass to country, waltzes and polkas, gospels and hymns, jazz and big band, and classical music. She also enjoyed needlework, dancing, being a homemaker, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Her family was her greatest treasure.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, three daughters, Janice and her husband, Murray Arnold, of Columbia, Maryland; Patrice of Pella, Iowa; Lisa and her husband, Eldon Van Schepen, of Hull, Iowa; two sons, Robert of Lexington, Nebraska and Bruce and his wife, Linda Ewoldt, of Hull, Iowa; eight grandchildren, Bryan, Stephanie and Adam Arnold, Michael and Nicholas Van Schepen and Matthew, Christopher and Nicole Ewoldt; three great grandchildren, Jack and Madelyn Arnold and Hunter Van Schepen; one sister, Sylvia Unrau of Paullina; one brother-in-law, James Ewoldt and his wife, Jo Ann of St. Louis, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, LaVerne Niebuhr and Marilyn Ewoldt of Paullina; also many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee; her parents, a brother, Wesley; a sister, Phyllis; and brothers-in-law, Tom Drake, Roy Ewoldt and Ted Unrau.
