MARLENE G. STEVENS

Marlene Grace Stevens, the daughter of Jim and Bertha (Wessels) Dagel, was born on February 7, 1936 on her grandparent’s farm in Osceola County, Iowa. She was baptized at age 3 at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashton, Iowa. Marlene lived her youth on a farm southwest of Ashton and went to grade school at Dale #7 country school. She later graduated from Ashton High School in 1953. On June 10, 1953, she was united in marriage to Kenneth Stevens in Ashton, Iowa. To this union six children were born. The couple made their home on a farm near Doon, Iowa for five years. They then moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where Ken went to Barber College and Marlene worked for Preferred Insurance Company. After college the couple settled in Primghar, moving there in 1960. Marlene was a homemaker until the children got older, and then worked several jobs: church secretary, O’Brien County Bell, auditor’s office, liquor store, and at Hy-Vigor for thirty-three years. Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth R. Stevens on June 27, 2007 in Paullina, Iowa.
Marlene was a member of Grace Lutheran Church; she served as secretary and treasurer of the ladies auxiliary VFW Post #9129. She loved to bake and made many birthday and wedding cakes. She liked watching NASCAR races, Iowa football and basketball games. She liked to read, embroider, and listen to music.
Marlene passed away on Monday, March 21, 2011, at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus, Iowa, reaching the age of 75 years, 1 month, and 14 days.
Left to cherish her memory are her five children, Marcia Kaye Campbell and her friend, Scott Mattler of Marcus, Iowa; Kelly James and his wife, Julie Stevens of Primghar, Iowa; LaDona Rae Traver of Grand Rapids, Minnesota; Charla Dee and her husband, Randy Nelson of Fort Dodge, Iowa and Shelli Ann and her husband, Tom Raymond of Primghar, Iowa; ten grandchildren, Tim, Cody, Sherri, and Kenneth and his wife, Cassie Norris all of Marcus, Iowa; Collan and his wife, Angela Traver of Waterloo, Iowa; Joel and his wife, Katie Traver of Rochester, Minnesota; Bryce Presswood of Fort Dodge, Iowa; Matthew and Derek Stevens of Primghar, Iowa and Steve Raymond of Paullina, Iowa; seven great-grandchildren, two sisters, Shirley and her husband, Eldon Techen of Sheldon, Iowa and Janice Schilling of Little Rock, Iowa; also other relatives and many friends.
Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, an infant daughter, Rhonda Beth; a grandson, Chad Norris; her parents; two sisters-in-law; and two brothers-in-law.
