MARY E. COON

Mary Elizabeth Coon, the daughter of George and Grace (Oelkers) Dickinson, was born December 21, 1910 in Ringsted, Iowa. She graduated from Sioux Rapids High School in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. On April 13, 1931, she was united in marriage to Ellis Coon in Des Moines, Iowa. After their marriage the couple lived in Sioux Rapids, where the operated a restaurant until 1942, when they moved to Long Beach, California. The couple returned to Iowa and to Sheldon in 1945, when they purchased the L’Trio Grill and together they operated it until their retirement. Her husband preceded her in death on January 6, 1989 in Sheldon. She remained in the family home and moved to the Christian Retirement Home and in 1994, she moved to the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon. Mary passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2005 at the Northwest Iowa Health Center – Senior Care in Sheldon, reaching the age of 94 years, 5 months and 10 days.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sheldon and had taught Sunday school at the Congregational Church in Sheldon. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, PEO, Merry Go Round Club, was a Girl Scout leader. Mary enjoyed reading, crafts and knitting.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Nola and her husband, Jack Naughton of Iowa City, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Erride Coon of Salt Lake City, Utah and Arsene Coon of El Seguado, California; also nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one brother, George Dickinson; and four sisters, Jean Reibsamen; Grayce Reibsamen; Peggy Powers and Belle Schomaker.
