Mary Jean Portz, the daughter of Andrew and Angela (Buckley) Ahlers was born on December 23, 1936 on the family farm near Remsen, Iowa. Jean attended St. Marys Catholic School in Remsen graduating in 1954. After high school she worked as a Switchboard Operator at Central Telephone Company in LeMars, Iowa. On May 25, 1959, she was united in marriage to Gerald J. Portz at St. Marys Catholic Church in Remsen, Iowa. She enjoyed her Bridge Club for many years and was a member of the Merry-Go-Round Club and two Red Hatters groups. Most of all she enjoyed a lifetime friendship with her classmates and family vacations which consisted of annual fishing trips to Northern Minnesota and later trips to both the east and west coasts and places in between.
