MAXINE KRAGT
Maxine Kragt, the daughter of Henry Peter and Nellie (Van Wyk) Vos was born April 6, 1914 on her parent’s farm home near Doon, Iowa. She received her education in Doon and later graduated from Boyden High School, and went on to receive her teaching certificate from Buena Vista Teachers College in Storm Lake. Maxine taught country school in the Hull, Iowa area. On November 5, 1936, she was united in marriage to Benjamin Kragt in Doon, Iowa. After their marriage the couple first farmed in the Hull area and later moved to a farm in the Sheldon area. The couple farmed for many years until retiring in the fall of 1982 and moving into Sheldon. Her husband preceded her in death on February 2, 1992 in Sheldon. Maxine remained in the family home until moving to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in 2003 and in March of 2007, she moved to the Sanford Health Center - Senior Care. Maxine passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2008 peacefully in her sleep at the Sanford Health Center in Sheldon, reaching the age of 93 years and 11 months.
She was currently a member of the Bethel Reformed Church in Sheldon and was a former member of the Matlock Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. While her children were growing up she was a 4-H leader. Maxine enjoyed quilting and ceramics. She alos enjoyed doing oil paintings and was known to recite the Gettysburg Address by heart.
Maxine is survived by five children, Lily and her husband, Rev. Sylvester Van Oort of Oacoma, S.D.; Helen and her husband, Ray Tidblom of Madison S.D.; Egbert and his wife, Glenda Kragt of Sheldon; Phil and his wife, Deann Kragt of Sheldon and Ruth and her husband, Gordon Espelund of Spirit Lake, Iowa; also 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, a sister, Sylvia (Todd) Lubbers of Orange City and two sisters-in-law, Katie DeZeeuw of Hull and Tillie VerSteeg of Rock Rapids; also other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and ten brothers and sisters.
