Mildred Arlene Kruse, was born April 8, 1918, in Paullina, Iowa to Albert and Katherine (Dreesen) Steffen. Mildred had four brothers, Ray, Clarence, Harold and Ed and a sister, Frances. Mildred attended Lutheran school in Paullina. On February 22, 1939, she married Raymond (Ray) Herman Kruse at her parent’s home in Paullina. To this union four children were born, Beverly, Gary, Bill and Randall. Mildred shared her life with Ray for 62 years before he passed away on October 25, 2001. They made their home on two different farm places near Calumet and moved to a newly built house in Calumet in 1977.Mildred loved to play cards with her lady friends who gathered regularly throughout her adult life for card club. For years Mildred and Ray enjoyed card games with several couples who would meet at each other’s homes. Many nights of laughter were shared. Mildred also enjoyed playing cards and checkers with her children and grandchildren. She never lost a game on purpose. She was an excellent cook with many specialty dishes that are vividly remembered by her family and friends. The grandchildren’s best memories would be centered around “staying night” at Mildred’s and Ray’s home and the holiday gatherings.
