R.L. GREEN

R.L. Green was born to Sandy and Pearl (Eldred) Green on July 28, 1926 on the “home place” in Boyden, Iowa. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Boyden. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. R.L. lived most of his life in Boyden. He went to the country and town schools in Boyden. He left to serve his country before completing high school. R.L. was inducted into the United States Army at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He spent his service time at Fort Lewis, Washington, in basic training and in the Headquarters Heavy Equipment Division. His name was scratched from P.O.E. three times. On returning home from Fort Lewis he started his own trucking company, Green Trucking Service. He fell in love with the love of his life; Lillian Goetsch and they were married on August 12, 1949 in Sheldon, Iowa. They lived in Sheldon for three years and then moved to Boyden. They had two daughters, Janet and Pearl “Lee”. They were the light of his life. R.L. also worked at HG Heusinkveld Trucking, Omar Bread, Demco, Farmers Feed and Supply as a driver and as shop foreman. Most summer weekends were spent at Gull Point State Park, at the Okoboji Lakes. R. L. passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2008 at the Sanford Medical Center in Sheldon, Iowa reaching the age of 81 years, nine months and two days.
R.L. was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon and served on the church council. He was a Buick car collector, a charter member of the Buick Club of America in Omaha, Nebraska, Sioux Falls Horseless Carriage Club. After retirement R.L. became very active in the American Legion, serving as District Commander, District Historian, District Vice Commander, Service Officer for Sioux County, helping many veterans and widows. R.L. was always helping someone. He was a member of the Chef De Gar, a special branch of the American Legion. He was a member the William Monster American Legion Post 272 of Boyden, served on the board of trustees at Northwest Iowa Community College; he loved being “Santa” at Christmas.
Those left to cherish his memories are: his wife, Lillian of Boyden, Iowa; his daughters, Janet and her husband, Allen Moore of Sioux City, Iowa and Pearl “Lee” and her husband, John Ekman of Salem, Oregon; three grandchildren and their spouses, Christopher and Tiffany Moore; Janal and Kenny Davis; Jason and Kelina Moore; four great-grandchildren, Quinn, Alaine, Kaityn and Lorna; along with numerous friends and relatives.
R.L. was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, Elizabeth; his brothers, Abel, Marvin, Vernon and Richard; his nephews, Duane, Jerry and Donald and a niece, Carol Ann.
R.L. never met a Stranger!
