RICHARD R. DICK BROOKFIELD
Richard Roy Brookfield, the son of Beryl and Arlene (Andersen) Brookfield was born March 21, 1940 in Cherokee County, Iowa. His schooling was in Sutherland, graduating from Sutherland High School in 1958. He went on to attend Buena Vista College in Storm Lake for one year. He returned to Sutherland where he joined his father at Brookfield Chevrolet dealership. On June 23, 1961, he was united in marriage to Marlene Aakhus at the Hope Lutheran Church in Everly, Iowa. After their marriage the couple settled in Sutherland where he operated the Brookfield Chevrolet until 1985. He went to work for Hesse Chevrolet in Marcus where he worked as a salesman and parts manager for 27 years until his retirement in 2012. His wife preceded him in death on November 13, 1995. Dick passed away at his home in Sutherland on Monday, November 16, 2015 reaching the age of 75 years, 7 months and 25 days.
He was baptized on April 14, 1946 at the Methodist Church in Sutherland and later confirmed on November 26, 1961 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Sutherland where he was currently a member. His family was very important to Dick especially enjoying the Sunday night suppers as a family. He had served as a Sutherland City Councilman. Also he was a member of the Sutherland Fire Department for 25 years serving as an assistant Chief for many of those. Dick enjoyed playing cards he and Marlene were in a card club in Sutherland for many years. He collected NASCAR, Chevrolet, and Sutherland memorabilia. He was a great fan of Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Dick is survived by his two daughters, Dawn (Jim) Jensen and Nicole (Heath) Nelson all of Sutherland; three grandchildren, Jessica James and fianc, Chad Mahler; Lindsay DeKok and fianc, Dave Thompson and Spencer Nelson; four great grandchildren; Hunter Moos, Hailee James, Jager and Krue DeKok; one brother, Lorin (Ragean) Brookfield of Paullina and one sister, Jean (Larry) Dau of Primghar; special friends; Larry Aakhus, Linda Nellis, Julie Stanford and Mariane Nielsen; his in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
