Theresa Maxine Lenz, the daughter of Arthur and Mathilda (Bleckwenn) Helmke was born February 20, 1922 in Rodman, Iowa. She graduated from Rodman High School where she was salutatorian of her class. On October 13, 1940, she was united in marriage to Walter Lenz in Whittemore, Iowa. To this union ten children were born. After their marriage the couple farmed in the Emmetsburg, Iowa area before moving to Spirit Lake for one year and operating a supper club. The couple moved to Paullina in 1962 and owned and operated Wally & Max’s Tap. Her husband preceded her in death on September 17, 1969 in Iowa City. Max operated the tap until the early 70’s. She worked at United Foodland in Paullina and for 15 years before her retirement in 1994, she was the manager of the Casey’s General Store in Paullina. She remained in the family home and moved to Prairie View Retirement Home in Sanborn on November 4, 2010. She passed away at Prairie View on Saturday, December 18, 2010 reaching the age of 88 years, 9 months and 28 days.
She was baptized on April 2, 1922 and later confirmed on April 28, 1935 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Whittemore. She was currently a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. She was a former member of the Dorcas Society and currently a member of the Ladies Aid of the church.
Maxine is survived by her eight children, David Joel and his wife, Delores Lenz of Muscoda, Wisconsin; Phyllis Maxine and her husband, Rod Reimer of Crescent, Iowa; Thomas William Lenz of Liberty, Missouri; John Walter and his wife, Jan Lenz of Lindenhurst, Illinois; Mary Ann and her husband, Gary Meyer of Paullina; Daniel Arthur and his wife, Marian Lenz of Forest City, Iowa; Martha Jane and her husband, Bruce Jellema of Alton, Iowa and Laura Elizabeth Lenz of Alton, Iowa; also 19 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, Larry Dennis Lenz and Allen Dean Lenz; a daughter-in-law, Karen Lenz; three grandchildren, Jess Alan Meyer, Rusty Reimer and Dorothy Lenz Delsemme; her parents, two brothers, Wayne and his wife, Lou Helmke; and William Helmke; and one sister, Geraldine Helmke.
