Verna Emma Bertha Baerenwald, the daughter of Fred and Martha (Schroeder) Heitritter, was born January 14, 1909 on the family farm near Boyden, Iowa. She received her education in a country school near Boyden and graduated from Boyden High School in 1927. She then attended a semester of Normal Training in Spencer, Iowa. Verna taught in several country schools around Boyden until her marriage to Martin H. Baerenwald on July 2, 1938 at St. John Lutheran Church near Boyden, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple farmed near Primghar for four years. In 1943, they purchased the Baerenwald Family Farm near Boyden and farmed this land until their retirement in 1991. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin on June 16, 2004 in Sheldon. Verna remained on the home place up until the last 6 months, when she moved in with her daughter Marlene. She passed away on Thursday, October 20, 2005, at her daughter’s home south of Boyden, Iowa, reaching the age of 96 years, 9 months and 6 days.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church of rural Boyden and of the Dorcas Society. She enjoyed fishing, working, cooking and keeping her grandchildren full.
Verna leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Marlene and her husband, James Doorenbos of Boyden, Iowa; 3 grandsons, Michael, Scott and his wife, Robin; and Ryan; 3 great-grandchildren; Brandon, Jocelyn and Allison. Other survivors include 2 sisters, Elsie Baerenwald of Jasper, Minnesota and Julia Van Diepen of Sheldon, Iowa; and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Martin; a great-grandson, Jessie; and 3 brothers, Jack, Arthur and Lewis.
