VINCENT L. HULS
Vincent Louis Huls was born on August 9, 1932 on a farm northeast of Salem, SD. He was the ninth of 14 children to be born to Maurice and Agnes Huls. Vince’s family lived on the family farm for 25 years. Vince attended school at St. Mary’s in Salem, SD, Hartman District 96 and graduated from Humboldt High School in 1950. He went on to become a “10-week wonder” (a person who attends college for 10 weeks and ‘wonders’ if he can teach).
He started teaching in the fall of 1950 in Sioux Falls area rural schools. In 1965 the family moved to Boyden, Iowa where he was principal at Boyden-Hull Elementary School until his retirement in 1994 after spending 56 continuous years in school. He received his Bachelor of Science from General Beadle State Teachers College and his Masters of Science in Elementary Administration from the University of South Dakota.
He was active in community affairs. In South Dakota he helped start a YMCA Friendly Indian Program and assisted with starting Boy Scout Troop 216. Later in Iowa, he helped organize and later became scoutmaster of Troop 216 and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow, an honorary society for dedicated Boy Scouters. He was instrumental in developing the Boyden Recreation Area and Otter Valley Golf & Country Club. He served in many capacities in the Boyden Commercial Club. He was active in the Eagles Club in Sheldon and a member of the Sheldon Garden Club. As an educator he held numerous leadership positions in local AEA’s and the state ISEA. He received the Outstanding Principal of the Year Award for northwest Iowa. As a member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church, he was lector, commentator, and Eucharistic minister at masses and for shut-ins. He also served on the church advisory council and was a member of the St. Patrick’s Knights of Columbus.
Vince and Yvonne enjoyed spending the last 16 winters at Superstition Sunrise RV Park in Apache Junction, AZ. They were active game players and especially enjoyed playing Jokers.
Vince married the love of his life, Yvonne Ann Reecy, in 1952 and grateful for having shared his life are his wife (deceased September 10, 2011), daughters Deborah (Michael) Gavin of Cedar Falls, IA; Denise (Michael) Boeve of Hartley, IA; Dawn (Larry) Smit of Sheldon, IA and sons Darwin (Susan) of Sigourney, IA; Darryl (Mary Jo) of Boyden, IA; Dean (Mindy) of Brooklyn, IA; Douglas of Phoenix, AZ and 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.
