VIOLA C. HELLMANN
Viola Kathryn Clara Hellmann, the daughter of William and Mary (Menke) Dau, was born on March 29, 1920 near Gaza, Iowa.
Viola was baptized and later confirmed at the Zion Lutheran Evangelical & Reformed Church, Calumet, Iowa. She attended the Gaza Consolidated School, graduating with honors in 1937.
Viola and Edward Hellmann were married in Calumet on October 5, 1940. After their marriage they lived on the family farm east of Germantown. To this union three children were born. Viola was active in Ladies Aid and PTA while a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Germantown, later becoming a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina. She began working in the Paullina Bakery in the mid 60’s and continued to work there for 18 years. Her life was filled with music, especially playing piano and dancing. She also enjoyed embroidering, quilting, gardening and cooking.
Edward passed away in January 1975. Viola continued to live on the family farm until 1983 when she moved to Paullina. She became a resident of the Paullina Care Center in 1999 and passed away on April 24, 2007 at the care center at the age of 87 years and 26 days.
Throughout her life, she was known for her friendly smile, strong faith and perseverance.
She is survived by her most cherished treasure of family including children: Julene and Jon Swenson of Stillwater, MN, Joel and Pat Hellmann of Sutherland, IA, and Sheryl and Les Fiddelke of Paullina, IA; her grandchildren: Michael Hellmann, Sara Jo Swenson, Melissa and Chris Sweeney, Amy and Mark Freeman and Aaron and Brooke Fiddelke; her great grandchildren: McKenzie, Dakota, Dallas and Ariel Hellmann, Brea, Taralyn and Abby Sweeney, Brooke, Trent and Cade Freeman, MiKayla and Trevor Fiddelke and Nicholas Rhodes.
