WAYNE E. REED

Wayne Eldon Reed was born July 17, 1938 to Walter and Violet (Olson) Reed in Moody County, South Dakota. He was the youngest of seven children. He was baptized into the Christian faith at the Baptist Church in Trent, South Dakota and graduated from Trent High School in 1956. As a teenager, he held jobs as a lifeguard at the local swimming pool and worked on a crew building grain elevators. Following a year of farming for his brother, Wayne attended and graduated from Sioux Falls College (University of Sioux Falls) with a history major. While in college, he was active in athletics (especially football) and in student government as student body president. Wayne taught one year at Oldham High School before earning his Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling at South Dakota State University. During these years, he joined the South Dakota National Guard.
On January 18, 1963, Wayne married Marian Lucille Lee at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arlington, South Dakota. To this union two daughters were born: Cheryl Lynn and Michele Kay. In 1963, Wayne was employed as a Guidance Counselor at Morgan High School in Morgan, Minnesota, followed by employment as a Guidance Counselor at Maurice-Orange City High School in Orange City, Iowa from 1965-1971. The family moved to Sheldon in July of 1971 where Wayne was hired by NIVS (Northwest Iowa Community College) as Adult Education Coordinator. He became Adult Education Director in 1976. While at NCC, Adult and Continuing Education became his special focus and he directed the organization of the first Sheldon Community Ambulance Team (SCAT). During his employment at NCC, Wayne held several state and national offices in organizations of adult and continuing education. He retired in 2002. Wayne passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Whispering Creek Assisted Living in Sioux City, Iowa, reaching the age of 76 years, 10 months and 17 days.
Throughout his life, Wayne enjoyed sports. He was Assistant Football Coach at MOC and officiated high school and small college baseball and basketball for 26 years (working the State Baseball Tourney in 1982 and 1983). In his leisure time, league golf and bowling were among his favorites and he was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Minnesota Twins. When possible, Wayne attended USF football games and he still proudly wore his USF letter jacket to the games.
Wayne loved learning and meeting and working with people. He had a great knowledge of geography (possessed an inborn compass) and also had a special interest in history and politics. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and an active Kiwanian. Time spent returning to his roots in South Dakota and trips with family and friends were most enjoyable for him. In retirement, spending winter months on S. Padre Island, Texas and Mesa, Arizona were priorities. Most of these trips included special canine family passengers Dusty, Sammy and Kipper, each during their own separate lifetimes. Wayne retained a great respect and love for domestic animals and wild life and the environment. He enjoyed doing yardwork and did it with pride.
Wayne Eldon Reed is survived by his wife of 52 years, Lucille; his two daughters and their spouses, Cheryl and Brent Jensen and Michele and Chris Frommelt; five grandchildren, Brittney Jensen (Dakota Miller), Alex Jensen, Colin, Abby and Dylan Frommelt; one sister, Darlene Eggum and a host of special relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Fern Reed in infancy, Irene Anderson, Virginia Eide and Carol Knutson; brother, Ronald Reed.
