WILMA B. MARKS
Wilma Bertha Marks, the daughter of Will and Anna (Haase) Schmidt, was born December 13, 1916 in Sheldon, Iowa. She received her education in Sheldon and graduated from Sheldon High School. She also graduated from Sheldon Junior College with a teaching certificate in 1943. Wilma taught in several country schools in Lyon County; her last teaching position was in Dale Township #6. She was united in marriage to Peter H. Marks Sr. on February 19, 1946 in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, Iowa. The young couple made their home near Ashton in the old country school house, where Peter received his education. A few years later they moved to Peter’s family homestead, where the couple farmed. Her husband preceded her in death on December 15, 2001 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Wilma moved to the Beehive in Sheldon in May of 2004. Wilma became a resident of the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center-Senior Care in Sheldon in September of 2006. Wilma passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2007, at the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center in Sheldon, Iowa, reaching the age of 90 years, 7 months and 11 days.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Sheldon, the ladies aid, the Dorcas Society and had taught Sunday school at St. Paul’s for 60 years. Wilma was also a member of the Ashton American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president several times. She enjoyed quilting and knitting.
Wilma leaves to cherish her memory, her three children, Anna “Ann” and her husband, Don Fischer of Pella, Iowa; Peter “Pete” Marks Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa; Walter “Walt” Marks of George, Iowa; two grandchildren, Kristin and her husband, Paul Smith and Craig and his wife, Kelli Fischer; three-great-grandchildren, Micah, Isabel and Sarah Smith; four step-great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, Walter and William Schmidt; three sister, Elsie Scholten, Alvera Valentine and Gertrude Hulst.

God’s finger touched her and she slipped away
From earth’s dark shadows to a brighter day;
God saw the road was getting rough.
The hills were hard to climb;
He gently closed her weary eyes.
And whispered, “Peace be thine.”
To a beautiful garden this friend has gone.
To a land of perfect rest;
Though she is gone she still lives on
in the garden of memory.
