ARLENE K. WITTROCK
February 20, 1926 – November 14, 2020
Arlene Wittrock, 94, of Primghar, Iowa, passed away November 14, 2020 at the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa. Arlene, the daughter of Edward and Katherine (Jurgensen) Wiese, was born on February 20, 1926, at her family farm home in rural Larrabee, Iowa. She was baptized in March 1926 and confirmed in April 1939 at the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet, Iowa. She attended all twelve grades in Larrabee and graduated from Larrabee High School in May 1943. After graduation, she worked at the Victory Cleaners in Cherokee and the O’Brien County Farm Bureau in Primghar. On November 28, 1948, she was united in marriage to Donald Wittrock at the Zion United Church of Christ in Calumet, Iowa. After their marriage, Don and Arlene farmed north of Primghar from 1949 to 1988 when they retired and moved to their new home in Primghar.
Arlene was a member of the United Church of Primghar from 1951 to present. She was active in her church, teaching Sunday school, serving on many committees, participating in United Church Women, and working on the church newsletter. She was a member of Primghar Women’s Club and the American Legion Auxiliary. She greatly enjoyed her 35 years as superintendent of horticulture exhibits at the O’Brien County Fair. She treasured her many years as a farm wife, working with chickens and pigs, helping Don with the farm work, and raising her four boys and one daughter. Her many interests included embroidery, reading, doing word search, and baking, especially apple pies and chocolate chip cookies. The boys really liked her cookies and would often sneak them out of the freezer after school. She was a loving wife to Don for nearly 68 years and a caring mother, grandmother, and great grandmother to her growing family. She loved her family unconditionally and enjoyed every visit with them.
In February 2018 she moved to the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa. She enjoyed coffee and activities with her many friends. She is especially thankful for the care she received from staff, nurses, and aides during her time there. She passed away at the nursing home on November 14, 2020, due to complications from COVID-19, reaching the age of 94 years, 8 months, and 23 days.
She is survived by her five children, Darwin (Jan) of Eau Claire, WI, Gordon (Ruth), Steven (Beth), Marlin of Primghar, IA, and Sharon (Gordon Doak) of North Liberty, IA, 13 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald, brothers Raymond and Delbert, sisters Geneva Gerstandt and Norma Wiese, and daughter-in-law Jan Wittrock (Marlin’s wife).
