He graduated from Primghar High School in 1954 where he was an All-State football player. Arnie had offers to play college football but chose to serve his country and joined the Army. He served two years during the Korean War and was a radio operator in Germany.
After returning from the service, he married his high school sweetheart, Susan Young, of Primghar on October 10, 1954. They moved to a farm south of Primghar where they raised their family. Arnie had a true passion for farming as well as cattle feeding
Arnie served on the Farmers Coop Elevator Board, Land O’ Lakes Board, the Primghar School Board and became a co-owner of The Savings Bank with his brother Gerald. He continued to be active in the banking operations into his late eighties.
Arnie was owner and developer of the Leng Addition in southeast Primghar and helped facilitate bringing wind energy to O’Brien County. He was an active, lifetime member of Grace Lutheran Church serving on the Church Council and building committees.
Together with Sue, Arnie enjoyed dancing and traveling. They made cattle trips to Montana, Wyoming and western Nebraska fun for everyone, entertained their kids, relatives and friends in Palm Desert, California and made Okoboji their grandkids “happy place”.
He is survived by his four children: Jean (Darryl) Triplett of Primghar, Steve (Kathy) Leng of Arnolds Park, Mary (Jim) Thomson of Primghar and Jan (Mark) Westergard of Omaha as well as 13 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren, sister Betty Albertson of Littleton, Colorado and brother Gerald Leng of Primghar, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Sue and his parents Joe and Gertie Leng.
