Bettie A. Van Sloten, 80, of Boyden, passed away on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Her celebration of life will be held 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at United Presbyterian Church in Boyden with Pastor Brian Schafer, officiating.

Burial will be at Sheridan Township Cemetery in Boyden.

Visitation will be held after the graveside service in the basement of the church on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to United Presbyterian Church or Newkirk Reformed Church.

Arrangements are under the care of the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Boyden.

Bettie Ann Van Sloten, the daughter of Vern and Harriet (Wilts) Reimers was born on March 17, 1946, on the family farm by Boyden. She received her education from Boyden-Hull Schools, graduating in 1964. On November 25, 1964, Bettie was united in marriage to Norman Van Sloten. Norm and Bettie lived by Middleburg for a short time then moved to an acreage outside of Newkirk. Norm and Bettie were members of the Newkirk Saddle Club where they rode in many local parades. They resided on the family farm until they made the move to Boyden.

Bettie was the manager at Evie’s Hallmark in Sioux Center. She worked alongside Norm at K-Products for over twenty years and used her talents for decorating for holidays and special occasions.

Bettie was active in the Boyden Presbyterian Church and a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and decorating for every season. She loved taking pictures as she was quite the photographer. Bettie was known for sending cards for every occasion; having a specific drawer filled with cards for all occasions! She never missed a chance to add that extra thoughtfulness to someone’s day.

Bettie was welcomed to her eternal home on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the age of 80.

She will be lovingly remembered by son, Scott (Teresa) Van Sloten of Carnes; daughter, Mendee Thornbury of Emmetsburg; grandchildren, Megan (friend, Travis Elam) Van Sloten and Ashley (friend, David Buyert) Van Sloten, and Tyler (Paige) Thornbury; great grandson, Hype Thornbury; siblings, Fred (Arlys) Reimers, Carol (Dave Reinders) Pomerenke, Judy (Jim) Smits, and Sue Reimers; sisters-in-law, Coreen and Barb Van Sloten; also other relatives and friends. Bettie also leaves behind her beloved cat, Snowball.

Bettie was preceded in death by her son, Randy, her parents, husband, Norm, son-in-law, Steve Thornbury, and brother, Bill Reimers.
