Bonnie Lee Verburg, 83, was born on March 28, 1942, to William and Aletta Willemstyn in Orange City, Iowa. Bonnie was raised on a farm near Middleburg, Iowa, which will be a Century Farm in 2026. She graduated from Western Christian High School. Bonnie worked in the Middleburg Store and enjoyed the simple country life.
Bonnie met Edwin on a date after C.E. (Christian Endeavor) on a Sunday night. They were married on April 7, 1961, at the Free Grace Reformed Church in Middleburg, Iowa. Bonnie looked forward to being a wife and mother, and she and Edwin were blessed with three children. Bonnie and Edwin made their home two miles south of Sheldon on an acreage where they could enjoy crop farming and gardening.
Bonnie was a devoted homemaker, creating a loving atmosphere for her family. She had many interests, including sewing clothes for her children, crocheting afghans, watching car races on TV, and caring for her many loveable cats. She also looked forward to ordering unique gifts from mail-order catalogues for her children and grandchildren. Bonnie spent many years attending activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they loved seeing her in the audience. She was known for reading special poems during the holidays and preparing delicious food. Bonnie and Edwin visited various campgrounds with their camper, enjoying the outdoors and a relaxing time with their family.
Bonnie was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon where she participated in plays and choir during her earlier years, crocheted prayer blankets, and shared in a women’s Bible study. She and Edwin were also sponsors for Alpha Teens and worked in the sound booth at the church for several years.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 64 years, Edwin Verburg of rural Sheldon, Iowa, and her children: Aletha and Harlan Hoogeterp of Canton, South Dakota; Russell and Nora Verburg of Middleburg, Iowa; and Valerie and Keith Westrate of Mystic, Connecticut. Bonnie also dearly loved her grandchildren: Jeffrey Hoogeterp, Christina (Aaron) Seal; Erika (Grant) Benschoter, Kecia (Doug) Keady, Andrea (Troy) Miller; Crystal Westrate, Gabrielle Westrate. She was blessed with seven great-grandchildren.
Preceding Bonnie in death were her parents, William and Aletta Willemstyn, a 1-day-old twin sister, Connie Dee, and a 6-year-old brother, Robert Dean; a brother-in-law, Orville De Boer; and her parents-in-law, Henry and Ann Verburg.
