DARELD K. JOHNSON

Dareld K. Johnson, 90, formerly of Paullina, Iowa passed away Thursday, April 8, 2021 at the Akron Care Center surrounded by his family. Dareld Keith Johnson, the son of Leo Johnson and Marion Lorene Delmage Johnson King and grandson of James Louis Delmage and Marion O’Lena Michaelson Delmage, was born on January 30, 1931, at Cherokee, Iowa. He was a baptized and confirmed member of Grace Methodist Church until its closing in 1972, when he became a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Paullina. Dareld graduated from Paullina Community School. He was a proud member of the Class of 1948, helping to organize class reunions every 5 years and sometimes more often, the 70th reunion being the most recent, was still well attended.
Dareld went to work at a very young age to help support he and his grandmother Marion, who raised him, working for R.K. David in the drugstore and later at Schubert’s Clothing Store. This experience shaped his entire life and his work ethic served him well. On October 18, 1950, Dareld began his employment with Northern Natural Gas Company, working for the company for 38 years, until his retirement on July 1, 1987. Dareld enjoyed many lifelong friendships with not only with his co-workers in Paullina, but across the company. Dareld served his country during the Korean War, entering the United States Army on January 22, 1952. After basic training, he was stationed in Karlsruhe, Germany, where he served for sixteen months. He was honorably discharged on January 13, 1954. He frequently commented how happy he was he learned typing in school because he was assigned to the headquarters company where he performed office tasks and slept in heated barracks rather than a tent.
On August 10, 1958, Dareld and Shirley Ann Wakeman were united in marriage at Union Creek Lutheran Church in Union County, South Dakota near Akron, Iowa. Dareld and Shirley had two sons, Jeff Johnson and Scott Johnson. Dareld and Shirley were happily married for 62 years and shared a wonderful life together as true partners. Dareld was very proud of his family, always sacrificing so they could enjoy opportunities he did not have, and he was especially happy when Jeff and Scott graduated from college. He was also very proud of his granddaughters Kayla, Katie and Kenzie Johnson and Jessica Conolly.
Dareld was a member of Fulton Masonic Lodge of Paullina, an elder on the Session of the First Presbyterian Church, and served two terms as a member of the Paullina City Council. During his term on the City Council, Paullina implemented curbside recycling.
Dareld also served several years as a member of the first board of directors of the Paullina Community Library Foundation. He was an avid reader not only of books, but also magazines and newspapers, often clipping interesting articles to share with family and friends.
Dareld is survived by his wife Shirley, sons Jeff (and fiancé Leslie Connors) and Scott (and Nicole Johnson), granddaughters Kayla, Katie, Kenzie and Jessica, and many nieces and nephews.
Dareld was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was a good man, an example how to live a good life. Dareld will greatly missed by his family and friends.
