DELORES VANDER WILT

Delores Vander Wilt, age 85, of Sheldon, IA, passed away and met her Lord and Savior on February 25, 2017. Delores was born on May 9, 1931 in Boyden, Iowa, to parents Nic and Nell (Kwikkel) Rouwenhorst. She graduated from Boyden High School in 1949 and began working at the telephone office in Sheldon. She married Clifford Vander Wilt on November 11, 1950 and lived in Boyden until 1962. They moved to Sheldon as Cliff started his career at the Citizens State Bank and she became a full-time homemaker and volunteer. They were parents to three sons. Keith, (a retired teacher living in Jefferson, IA); Brian, (a banker in Buffalo Center, IA); and Dean, (an owner of a restaurant in Woodward, IA). Most important to Delores was her faith, family and friends. Her firm belief in God and devotion to her family supported her throughout her life. The family get-togethers with both the Rouwenhorsts and Vander Wilts meant so much to her. She enjoyed the annual family vacations while the boys were young and later many trips with Cliff, which included Hawaii, Alaska, and Europe. They also loved time spent at their cabins at Fish Lake and later Spirit Lake as well as their winter home in Tuscon, AZ. Delores continued to enjoy wintering in Tucson until 2014, after Cliff passed away on August 31, 1992.
Delores volunteered for many church and community organizations and functions. She was Bethel Church Junior Choir Director and Bible School Director for many years. She was guild, circle, and classis officers, active in the Christian Retirement Auxiliary, hospital bazaar director, civic music board member, Village Store & Spring Fling chairperson, and Tucson Meadows church director, plus many more. She enjoyed playing games, especially cards and scrabble. During her life, she enjoyed gardening and canning (sweet pickle relish and applesauce were family favorites), cooking and baking, ceramics, stitch work, and singing in the Tucson Meadow choir. She was an avid fan of the Gaither gospel singing group.
Delores is survived by her sons, Keith and wife, Beth (Jefferson, IA), Brian and wife, Amy (Buffalo Center, IA), and Dean (Granger, IA); grandchildren, Cara (Indianola, IA), Trisha (West Des Moines, IA), Heather (Phoenix, AZ), and Emily (attending college at UNI); sisters, Joy Van Velzen (Sheldon, IA) and LaVonne Meyn (Boyden, IA).
Delores was preceded in death by her husband Cliff and her parents.
