Doris Katherine Roth, 92, formerly of Sheldon, IA, passed away in Minneapolis, MN at Catholic Eldercare Northeast on April 23, 2021.
Doris was born August 9, 1928 at the family farm in Willow Lake Township near Wanda, MN in Redwood County to Raymond and Marcella (Hagert) Baune. Doris was the second of 11 children. She grew up on a farm and attended elementary school in a one room schoolhouse known as Country School 94. After graduating from the eighth grade, she left home to live on the farm of the Roman and Charlotte Haas family to help with household chores and to have the opportunity to attend high school in Lamberton MN, where she graduated in 1946. Having done well in math, Doris attended business school in Mankato MN completing a bookkeeping program. With the training she received, Doris accepted a job with John Morrell & Co. in Sioux Falls SD, where she worked in the accounts receivable department for 15 years. During this time Doris met many lifelong friends at work and was a member of St Joseph’s Cathedral and the Venture Club. It was while she was attending a dance at the Arkota Ballroom with her future sister-in-law, Lois (Leightheiser) Roth, that she met her future husband, Kelly.
Doris was united in marriage to Carlis “Kelly” E. Roth of Ashton, IA on August 19, 1961 at St Joseph’s Cathedral in Sioux Falls, SD. After a honeymoon camping out in the West they made their home in Sheldon, IA for 48 years. While living in Sheldon, in addition to caring for her family, she worked part-time as a bookkeeper for the Sheldon Sale Barn for many years. In the fall of 2009, she relocated along with her husband, Kelly, to Sioux Falls to be near two of her three children. When Kelly passed away suddenly in Florida in December 2012, she relocated to Saint Anthony, MN to live with her son, Jim, until she moved into Catholic Eldercare in NE Minneapolis in September 2015.
During her years in Sheldon, Doris loved playing cards, especially bridge, reading the daily newspaper, researching genealogy, walking with her friends, listening to music, and attending dances. Doris especially enjoyed the family summer camping vacations to the east and west coasts as well as Canada where they visited many national parks and museums. These family vacations instilled the love of travel in her children and inspired them to have that same passion. After Kelly retired, they enjoyed spending their winters in Bowling Green, FL.
Doris was a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Legion of Mary. Those who knew Doris well would say her life was defined by her Catholic faith, often attending daily mass, her love of family, and a strong work ethic.
She is survived by her three children, Jim of Saint Anthony, MN, Paul, and Julie (Lewis) both of Sioux Falls SD; her sisters, Rosie Ormberg of Windom, MN, Mary (Jerome) Schmit of Redwood Falls, MN, Betty Judd of Buffalo, MN, and Janice (Dennis) Jones of Hutchinson MN; her brothers, James (Myra) of Marshall MN, Virgil of Ramsey MN, and David (Nancy) of Excelsior MN; her brother-in-law, Max Lande of Waseca MN, and sister in-law, Ruth Baune of Maple Grove, MN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kelly, her parents, her sisters, Cyrilla Lande and Darlene Macht, brother, Vernon, brothers-in-law, Lenny Macht, Eugene Ormberg, and Walt Judd, and sister-in-law, Jan Baune.
