Edna Mae Beyer was born on October 18, 1926, to William and Tillie (Wissink) Beyer on the family farm south of Hull, Iowa where she grew up. She attended country school at the rural school located on their family farm, which she attended through the 8th grade. She then attended high school in Newkirk, Iowa. She was the youngest of seven children. Being the youngest child of a large family, she had many nieces and nephews that she lived close to and loved her whole life. Edna loved to have visitors and calls from family and friends and thankfully always knew who was calling and recognized their voices in spite of her advanced age.
Edna married Thomas Hubbling of Hull, Iowa in 1950, to this union a son, Terry William was born on August 10, 1951, and they lived in the Detroit, Michigan area, where Thomas worked for the auto industry. When Thomas died in 1951, she moved back to Sheldon, Iowa. Edna met and married Gerard Thys Braaksma of Sibley, Iowa on March 7, 1955, in Donna, Texas. Together they purchased a farm south of Sheldon in 1955. Gerard passed away in 2011, and Edna remained on the farm until her passing.
She was especially close to her four grandsons who spent many hours with grandpa and grandma on the farm and on trips. Many of the trips included other family members making many great memories. Everyone worked together on the farm and walking beans was always a bonding experience. The boys remember staying overnight, picnics at the bridge playing Annie Annie over, hide the thimble and making homemade ice cream to mention a few.
Edna and Gerard enjoyed traveling and spent some winters in Texas. They loved seeing the United States and especially enjoyed spending time at Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Edna had a STRONG personality and presence. She was kiddingly called “The Boss” of the farm by her grandsons.
Edna accepted the teaching of Jesus Christ and chose Christian Fellowship as her way of life. She opened her home to bible study and worship for over 30 years. She spent many days and nights visiting family and friends at the nursing home in Sheldon and Sibley.
Edna suffered a slight stroke in November of 2020 but recovered and stayed at home on the farm. She was able to stay at home due to the loving care she received from her nice Louetta Sperry and her daughter-in-law, Jannette Braaksma. She enjoyed having family and friends come to the farm and all the activities of the livestock and pets. Favorites were her “protector” Tillie, Brandon’s dog and Whitey, the orphaned farm cat.
Those left to cherish the memories are her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Jannette of Sheldon, Iowa; four grandsons: Brent and wife Katie and their children: Addyson, Carter, Hadley and Thys of Niles, Michigan; Dr. Brian and his wife Jennifer and their children: Jameson, Remmington and Gavin of Southlake, Texas; Brandon and wife Ashley and their children: Daniel and Ava of Sheldon, Iowa; Dr Bryce and wife Kortni and their children: Brynlee, Brielle, Bryer and Briggs of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one brother-in-law, Joh VerBeek of Rock Rapids, Iowa. Too numerous to list are all the nieces, nephews and cousins whom she had a special interest in.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Thomas Hubbling and Gerard Braaksma; sisters and brothers-in-law: Marie and Elmer Jansma, Annetta and Harold Sperry, Ellen and Edmond Kain, Hilda and Ray Powers; brothers and sisters-in-law: Lambert and Lucille Beyer, Willis and Grace Beyer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: George and Johanna Braaksa, Jake and Anna Braaksma, John and Lucy Steen and Margert Van Beek.
